If you were the GM (2010): Atlantic Division

Much like last year, CLS thought it would be best to poll some of our favorite team-specific bloggers and ask, "What would you do if you were your team's general manager?"

With the deadline approaching on Wednesday, these posts will be updated up until early Wednesday afternoon so keep an eye on the blog during that time. Feel free to tell us what you would do if you were the GM in the comments.

(And, as always, thanks to our contributors.)

New York Rangers

Scotty Hockey's take:

Ah, if I was Glen Sather I would light up a cigar with a $100 bill and laugh at all of the nerds on the internet coming up with trade deadline rumours. Don't you geeks know that I have the force on my side? Just like that I could use my Jedi Mind Tricks to take some of my problems away.

"These aren't the droids you are looking for. You are looking for a bloated contract that will screw up your salary cap for years."

"These aren't the droids we are looking for. I want Scott Gomez."

Bob Gainey may be gone but surely there is a GM out there who could take one of the albatrosses off of my neck. Wade Redden, the Jar Jar Binks of the Blueshirts, surely could find a home around the league.

During Tuesday's Ranger/Senator game the MSG staff went on and on about how Wade Redden was loved around Ottawa so why not send him back? Bryan Murray surely can be swayed by the dark side - after all, he basically traded Dany Heatley for Andy Sutton and Milan Michalek.

The force is strong with Doug Wilson.

Ok, enough of the fanboy fun. What Sather will likely do is deal away one of the kids who have yet to flourish - Brandon Dubinsky, Matt Gilroy or Bobby Sanguinetti - for some rental scorer that will help get the team one of the final playoff spots. How the team fares in the postseason is inconsequential as the big boss Jimmy Dolan only cares that the extra revenue comes in. Ray Whitney may be too expensive even for Glen but Raffi Torres or Alex Frolov probably aren't. If Sather totally loses his mind, he will overpay for a Paul Kariya or Owen Nolan.

Jar Jar and Wade Redden: kindred spirits in shame

I am of a different opinion - if the team makes the playoffs, great. If they don't, that's ok too. I didn't expect them to at the beginning of the season anyway. If I held the reins then I would add a cheap, tough defenseman (the good expensive ones are too costly) like Shane Hnidy, Brad Lukowich or Garnet Exelby. Sure they are slow but at least they aren't incompetent like Redden and Rozy, both of whom I would deal for a bag of pucks or some Tim Hortons donuts. The Rangers need some bodies to give Hank time and space to see the pucks.

On offense, first line centers and wingers are kinda hard to come by so why blow the future for one that will come and go? I would target some RFAs to audition for next season. I might see if I can get Fabian Brunnstrom cheap from Dallas to see if new scenery and Hank could help him re-find his game. I would avoid Andrew Cogliano like the plague but see how much Jack Skille would cost. Brad Boyes won't be a RFA but still somehow popped up in the rumour mill and is worth kicking the tires for. Unlike David Booth, Boyes isn't coming off a massive concussion - just a slump. After the Panthers said that they would blow up their team (which has since been slightly retracted), everyone started drooling over the thought of adding Nathan Horton. He would certainly be worth a package of say, Dubinsky, Sanguinetti and a 2011 pick but Florida can't be that stupid to deal a 24 year old first line center, can they?

We'll just have to see if Sather's Jedi powers of persuasion work on poor Randy Sexton.

"You want Wade Redden for Nathan Horton and Stephen Weiss."

"I want Wade Redden ... wait, what?"

It seems pretty obvious that Paul Holmgren has set in motion a series of events that will culminate with the addition of new Flyer at the cost of losing a current one. Waiving Dany Syvert and Riley Cote freed up about $20.76 in cap space and there's a lot of talk about the Flyers trying to acquire Dan Hamhuis.

We don't buy it. (Unless it happened already then we totally called it like 7 months ago)

While we seem Homer clearing up space we know that his goal is not to add a defenseman, but a forward. And not just any forward. He's had his eyes on one guy in particular for the past couple years - himself. And while we think Homer's onto something, we also think that he's being a little too narrow-minded.

You can make a scarier google image search than Flomax but ... don't do it anyway.

If we were GM, we'd petition the league to grandfather in some of our former contracts. Just like they did the helmet rule. We want to bring back Paul Holmgren, Rick MacLeish, Bill Barber, Bobby Clarke, and Moose Dupont. All combined they should make a salary somewhere around $350,000. These guys are leaders. They've all been there before. They're proven scorers. And with the 23 man roster limit not applicable after March 3rd we think this is the perfect time to inject our lineup with a whole lot of veteran presence. And maybe even some FLOMAX.

We have it from a good source, and retweeted by 400 other people, that Homer 100% intends to return to the lineup on Friday March 5th. If we were in his position we'd do what the people who invented the laser disc did - take a good idea and make it significantly better.
