Random trade idea: Giguere for Turco?

turco

It's odd that Marty Turco's future is the hot button topic in many circles today because TapeLeg and I were discussing the subject on his (yet to be released) Podcast Saturday. This is actually a dumb idea that came to me last week, I've just been a busy beaver who somehow lucked into good timing.

As we all know, it's been a rough couple years for Turco. At one point it seemed like the playoffs would be the only thing that would bedevil the puck moving, flamboyant goalie but nowadays it's unclear if he'll even remain the starter in Dallas. These struggles lead to questions from bloggers and MSM'ers alike.

The DMN's Mike Heika wrote a story that indicated some of the young goalies the Stars may eventually target (his piece is far more credible than the just-for-fun trade concept you'll see in this post) and Defending Big D also discussed the Turco question a bit as well.

In Anaheim, a great playoff run and superior play this season allowed Jonas Hiller to usurp former Stanley Cup and Conn Smythe winning goaltender J.S. Giguere for the Ducks' starting job. Amid trades, injuries and soon-to-be-retirements, the Ducks seem eager to completely hand the keys to younger players such as Ryan Getzlaf, Corey Perry and Bobby Ryan.

Giguere's poor play and expensive contract mean that it's only a matter of time before the Ducks grow desperate to deal him. Turco's inconsistent, sometimes hare-brained antics and expiring contract explain why people are wondering about his future.

It may not be the most glamorous plan, but let's see why (and how) a deal could make sense - for both teams - after the jump.

JUMP!

Dallas trades:

Turco + Fabian Brunnstrom - OR - one of their struggling, short-contract'd defensive youngsters such as Matt Niskanen, Mark Fistric or Nicklas Grossman.

Anaheim trades:

Giguere + Luca Sbisa - OR - one of their first/second round draft picks/some other prospect

How a trade like this would benefit Anaheim:

Unlike Turco's expiring deal, Giguere's contract continues through the 2010-11 season. Giggy's albatross $6 million cap hit weighs down what is - mostly - a value-laden Ducks roster built for what may be a promising future.

When you look at Anaheim's structure, it would make sense for Bobby Ryan to make the same as Getzlaf and Perry (both great values at $5.3 million). Such a contract would be a lot less of a burden on the cap if the Ducks essentially shuffled Turco/Giguere's salary to Ryan's bank account.

Let's face it, too, the Ducks seem committed to Hiller (34 GP to Giguere's 19, not to mention Hiller starting against both San Jose and Detroit last playoffs) and Hiller's bargain contract is set to expire. With Turco's expiring contract and Niedermayer's expiring contract, the Ducks could comfortably retain Hiller and Ryan while adding needed supporting cast members.

This trade, in my opinion, would be more beneficial to the Ducks than dealing for Vesa Toskala's expiring career (er, contract) because Dallas can throw in some value here and there while Toronto is basically the Land of Dismal Contracts. Maybe the Ducks would need to send a prospect like Sbisa or a high draft pick to Dallas, but they could get a once-franchise goalie and another short-term future guy for a desperate run at another playoff spot. Oh yeah, and they can keep two young guys who are impact players.

Well worth it when you consider the fact that Giguere's a dead man walking in California.

How the trade would benefit Dallas:

This might be a more difficult sell to the Stars since Giguere actually makes more than Turco, which is why Anaheim would have to do the old "Tricking the dog to eat medicine by wrapping it in peanut butter" routine. That peanut butter could be Sbisa or it could be one of Philadelphia's Pronger trade picks.

Another reason it could be useful is that while the Stars clearly want to move in a new direction, none of the goalies Heika lists have anything close to Giguere's pedigree. Perhaps Giguere could regain his elite form if he had a change of scenery?

The move could give the Stars time to start looking for long-term goaltending prospects (from what I know, their cupboard is quite bare) while maybe getting a piece for stomaching Giguere's difficult contract for a season.

Would it be that much worse than gambling on (and possibly overpaying) a Dan Ellis or Jaroslav Halak in free agency?

***

So, again, this trade might only make sense in my warped little mind but depending on the side items in this situation, it could be a true "both sides win" trade. What do you think? How should the Stars deal with Turco? And how in the world will Anaheim get rid of Giguere?
