sedins

After about a year loitering around Blogspot, Cycle like the Sedins officially badgered its way into the Bloguin community. You've either stumbled here via blind luck or perhaps you're already familiar with the silliness that flows from CLS. Regardless of how long you've been following the blog, you probably don't know much about its roots. So let me take you on an unnecessarily convoluted journey.

One may assume that this blog would be Vancouver Canucks centric ... after all it is named after those wacky Sedin twins. That would make sense. That would also be wrong.

CLS is the result of a few months of uneven brainstorming. It was clear that running a Penguins blog would be unnecessary since Pensblog covered "the cruel humor and professional wrestling references" bases better than one could ever imagine. So a team blog was out. Also, after witnessing the dominance of news gathering blogs (such as Puck Daddy and Kulkas Korner) it was obvious that a "straightforward" NHL blog would fail to offer anything new or interesting.

Over the years, I always loved the blogger "round tables" and other collaborative features you'd often see blogs both large and small. It dawned on me that no one truly committed to that format. I always found myself wanting more of these features so then I thought: maybe I should do it? While CLS isn't exclusively about harvesting the thoughts of many brilliant bloggers, it is certainly the "thing" that sets this blog apart.

Now, as many erstwhile bloggers can attest, coming up with a name can be one of the biggest challenges in the process. It's important to avoid the generic (so you don't have to worry about someone already having "Odd Man Rush"), the bland (so people will be semi-interested and not think your page is just empty ad words) and the offensive. And if you can find a way for the blog title to be a microcosm of your content, then you're really on to something.

While I cannot recall exactly how I ended up naming the blog after a movie I'd never even seen, here's the basic formula for the name:

Cycle like the Sedins = "Bend it like Beckham"

bend_it_like_beckham_verdvd

  • You take a recognizable figure in each sport (sex symbol David Beckham in soccer, LOL generators in the Sedin twins for hockey)
  • Add a sport-specific reference (The "bend pass" in soccer; cycling the puck in hockey)
  • Factor in the fact that the concept of the site is often to "cycle" through different people's opinions on each topic ...
  • And finally, you factor in the fact that I'm immature and cannot help but giggle at large skulled, red haired Swedish twins.

Put that all together and that's why this blog is called Cycle like the Sedins. (And no, the walls around me aren't made of rubber)

So, yeah. That's the story of CLS. Please don't be too frightened. Do stay for refreshments and puns ...

Hey, it's awesome to see another NorthWest division NHL blog here on the Bloguin Network-even if it's not completely Nuck centric. Anyonebutdetroit (Colorado Avalanche) just launched about a week ago. My blog, Low On Oil, went live on Halloween this year. Maybe there's a Shames Flames blog in the works..?

Welcome to Bloguin!

big ups to you, James, because if it wasn't for Cycle... I don't know what I'd do. But it wouldn't be pretty, I guarantee you that.

@Jay

I'm sure there's a Flames blog out there ... I mean, it is Canada right?

Thanks Antony, although the bloguin crew deserve all the credit for that. It is pretty nice to have a well-designed "professional" place to plop all of my poorly conceived, unprofessional thoughts smilies/smiley.gif
